Most of us were handed the Christmas story before we were old enough to ask questions of it. By the time we were, the story had already settled into its felt-board version: a glowing stable, three wise men in matching robes, a heartless innkeeper, a quietly obedient Mary. We loved it. We knew where every figurine went in the manger scene.

But the story Luke and Matthew actually tell, is stranger, more political, more Jewish, and more dangerous than the version most of us inherited. It is a story about heaven refusing to stay in heaven.

That is the thread we are going to pull on for three weeks. Each session asks the same question from a different angle: what does it mean that heaven met earth in a particular Jewish girl, in a particular occupied town, under a particular emperor, on a particular night?

The questions are honest. The history is real. We are going to look at the texts together and see what is actually there. Join us on Wednesday, December 2. Childcare and dinner available by registration.
