GFUMC hosted 68 teams during the 7th Annual Basketball Tournament
Gainesville First United Methodist Church (GFUMC) hosted the 7th Annual MAC Madness Basketball Tournament Tuesday, February 19, through Monday, March 10, 2008 at the church on Thompson Bridge Road in Gainesville. Over 60 teams of nine, ten, eleven, and twelve year-old boys and girls participated.
Over 1,000 players, coaches, family and friends enjoyed the tournament held at GFUMC in the area known as the GREAT Room. The tournament is chaired by Robert Sapp, Director of Recreation, and coordinated by the Recreation Council.
This tournament means a great deal to the church and reflects our commitment to community outreach. Children from all over Hall County participate and all tournament proceeds are returned to the community through outreach programs, with an emphasis on children’s programs.
In the last five years the tournament has raised approximately $45,000 that was distributed back to youth programs such as: Gainesville-Hall County Boys and Girls Clubs, renovation of boy’s baseball and girl’s softball fields in Sparta, Georgia, the building of a playground at Sapelo Island, Georgia, and the building of a playground at the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf in Jamaica.
